Academic entry qualification overview

The standard academic entry requirement forthis master's programmeis aupper second class (2:1) UK honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant science or engineering discipline.

Please note that we consider grades achieved in key relevant modules in your undergraduate degree as well as the overall degree result.

English language

All applicants to the University (from the UK and overseas) are required to show evidence of English Language proficiency. The minimum English Language requirement for this course is:

  • IELTS: overall score of 7.0 with no sub-test below 6.5
  • TOEFL iBT: at least 100 overall with no sub-test less than 22. We do not accept 'MyBestScore'. We do not accept TOEFL iBT Home Edition.
  • Pearson PTE: at least 76 overall with no sub-test below 70

Fees and funding

Fees

Fees for entry in 2027 have not yet been set. For reference, the fees for the academic year beginning September 2026 were as follows:

The fees quoted above are fully inclusive of tuition, administration, and computational costs.

Fees for entry are subject to yearly review. The University reserves the right to increase your tuition fee by up to 7% each year for courses lasting more than one year, including to reflect rising costs associated with delivering our educational and wider student experience. International student CAS deposit

Self-funded international applicants are required to pay a deposit of 拢2500 towards their tuition fees before a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) is issued. Some applicants will be required to pay a higher deposit. More information on tuition fee deposits .

Policy on additional costs

All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application. How to apply

Applications are assessed through a staged admissions process, with key decision deadlines advertised below. However, offers are made throughout the application cycle. We give preference to students from high-ranking institutions and with grades above our minimum entry requirements. All applications will be reviewed within the relevant application stage. Applicants will receive a decision by the advertised decision date for their stage, at the latest.

As places are limited and some courses may close when at capacity, we recommend applying early.

There is no application fee for this programme.

Applications for 2027 entry:

Stage 1: Application received by 11 December 2026; Decision by 12 February 2027.
Stage 2: Application received by 26 February 2027; Decision by 23 April 2027.
Stage 3: Application received by 30 April 2027; Decision by 18 June 2027.

Applications received after 30 April 2027 will be considered depending on course availability.

Whilst we aim to give you a decision on your application by the deadline date, in some instances due to the competition for places and the volume of applications received, it may be necessary to roll your application forward to the next deadline date. If this is the case, we will let you know after the deadline date. As places are limited and some courses may close when at capacity, we recommend applying early.

If you receive an offer, you must accept it by the deadline stated in the offer letter, or the offer will be withdrawn.

Applicants with a conditional offer must provide evidence that they have met all conditions by 31 July 2027.

Advice to applicants

We require the following documents before we can consider your application:

  • Transcript of your studies to date including credit weighting and grades achieved. If your academic documents are in languages other than English, please provide them in their original version and official translations. 2+2 and 3+1 applicants must provide official transcripts and certificates from both institutions.
  • An official document from your university verifying your current weighted average mark (not arithmetic average) if this information is not included in your transcript of study. Please note : where grades are given as a percentage, the weighted average mark must alsobe recorded as a percentage, not as a GPA grade.
  • If still studying, please provide an official list of all the modules you are taking in your final year.
  • Degree certificate if you have already graduated.
  • A CV if you graduated more than three years ago.

We consider your full academic history including which course units you have taken and the marks obtained. Even if you have met our minimum entry requirements, we will take into account your marks in relevant course units in our final decision making.

If you graduated more than three years ago, we will also consider the information contained on your CV and any relevant work experience you have to assess if you are still able to fulfil the entry criteria.

CAS Information

Self-funded international applicants for this course will be required to pay a deposit towards their tuition fees before a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is issued. Course details

Course description

This course can trace its roots back to 1963 when it was set up by Franz K枚nigsberger, the first professor of machine tools in the UK. Over the years, this course as evolved by incorporating new topics of manufacturing technology and manufacturing systems into its syllabus.

Today, the course provides the perfect blend of fundamental subjects such as computer numerical machining, lasers, and metrology, with topics that have emerged over the last few years, for example bioengineering, Industry 4.0, and additive manufacturing.

As such, the course provides graduates with a background in mechanical engineering and engineering-related subjects, or even non-engineering backgrounds (such as physics), the perfect opportunity to further their knowledge in an area of great importance to the future of society.

The programme addresses three aspects of postgraduate manufacturing engineering education:

Firstly, to develop an understanding of and gain practical skills in manufacturing technology and processes, delivered through four technical units. These units focus on, for example, the use of lasers, robots, and additive manufacturing to produce highly accurate components in an environmentally sustainable and efficient manner. Secondly, to develop an understanding of the underlying organisation of the production of goods within a company, which is the subject of the unit 'manufacturing systems'. And, thirdly, through an additional three units, the development of general research skills such as how to design, conduct, and evaluate experiments, or how to use the finite element method for modelling the performance of cutting tools.

Encompassing a broad multi-disciplinary field and many diverse topics, you will enjoy in-depth study spanning everything from the fundamentals of manufacturing processes to the management of manufacturing systems and the use of finite elements. Upon completion of the taught part of the programme, in early June, you will then have the opportunity for specialised study in your dissertation project, where you will work on a specific problem independently for three months whilst being supported by an academic supervisor.

All units are delivered by academics who are experts in their field, with most units being delivered by members of Manchester's well-established . Numerous laboratory and computer cluster sessions will allow you to develop your practical skills, where you will not only benefit from 91直播's world-class research facilities such as the Laser Processing Research Laboratory and the Digital Manufacturing Laboratory, but also from the brand-new home of engineering here at 91直播, the Nancy Rothwell Building.

Whilst intended primarily for those wishing to pursue an industrial career, this programme is equally relevant as a preparation for further doctoral studies. As a result, every year, several of our graduates decide to continue with their academic career by studying a PhD either here at The University of Manchester or another top university in the world.

Teaching and learning

The Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Systems Management MSc is a full-time course which is studied over 12 months, commencing each year in September.

Throughout the course, you will develop advanced technical skills in both manufacturing technology and systems management, as well as soft skill such as team work, presentation, and report writing, all of which will enable you to pursue a career in both general and specialised engineering industries or develop an in-depth knowledge for a career in research in industry or academia.

During the MSc, students have the opportunity to attend industrial guest lectures, which not only further enhances your understanding of manufacturing but also gives you insight into the practical application of many of the subject areas you will be studying. Moreover, many of our current dissertation projects originate from, and are run in collaboration with, industry.

This degree has been accredited by the under licence from the UK regulator, the . Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).

Students completing an IMechE accredited degree are deemed to have met part or all of the academic requirements for registration as a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer and are in a strong position to move on to achieve professional engineering status after a period of initial professional development in industry.

The accredited MSc will meet, in part, the exemplifying academic benchmark requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer. Accredited MSc graduates who also have a BEng (Hons) accredited for CEng will be able to show that they have satisfied the educational base for CEng registration.
